pinkits “Of all the logistics and planning that go into an expedition, a groups’ emergency kits can sometimes be the difference between a complete or incomplete expedition” On the river, in addition to first-aid kits, repair kits, Personal Locators and so forth, every expedition should bring a pin-kit that is in good working order.  READ MORE

Navigation Part 3 -- Day to day.

This is part 3  of my navigation series.  This is the day to day
navigation on the trip.

Enroute I usually use a vinyl map pouch.  Each evening when I write
up my log, any map I've finished with goes into a 'done' ziplock,
and the maps I need the next day go into the vinyl pouch.  Having a mini biner to clip the map pouch to a pack is a good idea.  Not fun to chase a map on a windy lake.

Carrying a chunk of coreplast (corrugated plastic that election
signs are made of when they aren't cardboard) that just fits the
pouch gives you a solid surface to write on.

I write on my maps a lot.  With paper maps I use an mechanical
pencil, or a red rollerball pen.  I'm not happy with the writing
yet.  In a perfect world I could write a fine permanent red line
on a soggy wet map.

"What do you write", you ask.

Navigation Part 2 -- Preparation

Navigation -- Maps and Map Prep

Earlier I gave you some hints on evaluating routes.  In this article I'll talk about some map prep work that will make your life on the way easier.

I'm starting by assuming that you are traveling in Canada.  Some of these tips will change somewhat if you are using different maps.

Canoe Games

It happens. Nature is beautiful. The Wild is daunting. But there are times, that frankly, it's starting to get dull.

Over the years I've invented 4 games to play when things are slow.

Taps.

Taps was invented to keep long lakes from being a game of bumper cars. (Can you tell that most of my canoeing has been with teenage males…) In Taps, the goal is to tap the other canoe's bow or stern plate. No touchbacks until

Daily Routine

If you need to knock off the miles, then set up a routine for the day and stick to it.  There will be exceptions.  If you are ahead of schedule, and pass a gorgeous spot three hours before you normally stop, then by all means, take advantage of the beauty.  Similarly if you've been watching the waves on Lake Athabasca for three days, then paddle all night.

But generally you will get more miles in your wake with a

How long will it take...

"How long will the Mujatik take us"

For years I was 2/i.c. and navigator for trips at St. John's.  I would often do a lot of the detail route planning.  Here's some of the factors I used.  Feel free to send me comments This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

First question:  What is your pain threshold?  How many hours are you willing to work per day?  With the kids, I would general figure on an hour per grade.  E.g. If the boys were mostly grade 9's I'd count on
