“Of all the logistics and planning that go into an expedition, a groups’ emergency kits can sometimes be the difference between a complete or incomplete expedition” On the river, in addition to first-aid kits, repair kits, Personal Locators and so forth, every expedition should bring a pin-kit that is in good working order. On May 24th 2011, Chris and James will embark on an epic Canadian canoe expedition from Jasper, Alberta to Fort Smith, Northwest Territories. The estimated distance will be about 1450km and the time spent out in the wild will be around 35 days. The Athabasca is rich with history, such as the First Nations who lived along its edges and even used the Tar Sands to seal their birch bark canoes. As the Europeans came over, the Athabasca became a major highway to the north for the fur trade; thus competition was fierce amongst the fur trading corporations of the Hudson Bay Company (Bay Men or York Boat men) and the North West Company (Nor’westers). Watch as the CanoeGuys.ca rediscover the amazing fur trade and exploration history of Western Canada as they paddle back into history. Follow them as they navigate through the wild, rapids, ghost towns and much more along the Athabasca and Slave River systems.
Jasper to Fort Chipewyan will take the CanoeGuys.ca approximately 4 weeks; from there they will go down the Slave River to Fort Smith their destination. The Entrance to Fort Smith is marked with world famous rapids and the largest pelican nesting ground in North America.
Our first three days of adventure will be filmed by Seekers Media, an outdoor media company such as canoeguys.ca. Seekers will follow Chris and James as they rip through rapids, battle bugs and paddle two river systems in their pursuit to reach Fort Smith, NWT. Along certain points they hope to be filmed by their third voyageur Tyler Williamson.
The voyage will be the first expedition broadcast live on social media, 3-5 tweets a day, in Canada. We will deliver at least three messages a day to our Facebook and Twitter profiles. This is going to be truly amazing, for the first time in expedition history individuals will have the capacity to leave their mark. The CanoeGuys.ca hope for their audience to engage online with the expedition messages they send out from their canoe. Individuals who see the CanoeGuys.ca go by on the river bank or a bridge will have the ability to instantly respond to their location on Twitter and say they saw us or write and respond to something else related to the voyage.
Fans of the CanoeGuys.ca will have the ability to sync up photo and video with our messages via the CanoeGuys.ca webpage and social media platforms. CanoeGuys.ca will also be raising money for a not-for-profit, they are just waiting upon further details before they mention who it is.
